Why reupholster when I can buy a new chair new at Ikea for less?

The question that has dogged traditional upholsterers for the last half a century at least.

Let me start you off with the classic answer:

1) Quality. Upholsterers can give you far better quality than a big box store.

That is certainly true, friends. I've seen the difference over and over again when I pry off the old fabric and look at the springs, cotton, dacron, webbing, etc, or lack thereof.

BUT that answer has never completely satisfied me, and I don't think I'm alone.

So here's more reasons that a new generation, even those who don't inherit Grandma's sofa, should embrace reupholstery:

2) It's environmentally friendly!

Imagine how much more waste we produce nowadays when we throw out our furniture every five years instead of reusing the same couch repeatedly and just updating the fabric and padding!

3) You are the designer, and can choose whatever fabric or fabrics call your name!

Does HGTV say that your favorite fabric isn't in season? Who cares! Do top designers advise you to go neutral on the couch and only take risks with the pillows? Forget that!

4) You have complete control over the inside of your furniture too.

Yes, there's so many different options for your piece's innards as well, from antique style horse hair to eco-friendly soy based foam. What will give you peace of mind?

5) You can think outside the box.

Take a look at the "Ideas to Inspire" section or take to Google yourself. There are so many possibilities that will never make it to Ikea. Some that cost almost nothing. Dream big! Chalkboard picture back?  Square buttons? Special orders don't upset us.
